lol. it was really need to watch this behavior. when they had Merlin in the holding tank and Shouka doing practice in the show tank, Merlin would just float around and then stop at the gate to see how things were going, then when no one came to the gate he continued his lap around the tank. But as soon they let shouka back into the middle holding tank and opened the gate, he was through it in a flash rubbing against her and chattering up a storm.

I have a question. Why they are together in the same tank? Who decided to do it?

now this is me assuming, I never got to ask one of the keepers, so this is my gues:

I am assuming they got put in the same tank because shouka had not been doing well alone by herself. But they did not just let them be in the same tank together, they have spent the past years getting merlin used to her and he does shows with her and over that time Shouka has developed a bond with merlin and the other dolphins.

oh alright. Why did Shouka wasn't with other orcas? They're sociable mammals, though.

yes, i know. it is sad in that sense.

Shouka was baught from france by america. She was captive born so they took her from her family in the french marine animal theme park and shipped her to america. When she finaly came to this animal theme park in california, they had no orcas. she was the first orca in a long time. Currently there are no orca for sale. They had tried to by a male orca from argentina but there were legal disputes about this male orca and because of not doing things right, they did not get the male orca. Six Flags does not want to sell her to a different park that has other orcas and i think thier plan still is to get another male orca so they can start a breeding program.

So for now, she has no other orcas.

This is why i still don't like marine parks. Orcas are pulled apart their family and stuff and turning around inside a tank. But yes we say that the tank is big enough but the very first orcas were separated to their closes from the ocean.
But i have nothing against captive born ones, that's logical.
And i didn't know that Shouka was bought by America. I have a pic of her when she was a baby, back in 2000. That makes me feel very sad.
